Movies Today.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was on TV today. Such an amazing good movie. The music was great, used in the correct scenes and more importantly whenever there was an emotional scene it didn't cut in. Most movies today have strong music to cut in when there is an emotional scene, like we the audience are idiots and can't empathise or understand the situation/characters. Long and good takes. I could go on and on. My point is whatever happened to modern day movies? Seriously! Today we have over the top actors, always clean and perfect looking, even when they been through hell. I know I am ranting, but I think there is something wrong with todays movies, the last good movie I saw was (and when I say good I mean a real master piece) Jackie Brown.

If you haven't seen this movie yet, go do yourself a favour and rent it on dvd the next time you're having a movie night. It's a long movie, but it's well worth every second. Just like you owe yourself to watch these movies.

Bladerunner
Rashomon
Ran
Escape from New York
Taxi Driver
Apocalypse Now
Carlito's Way
Deer Hunter
Once upon a time in the West
Jackie Brown
Das Boot

There are plenty of other movies, but these great movies often get overlooked. It beats the hell out of all the heavy CGI movies today (The modern movies are entertaining no doubt, but great cinema?).
Maybe I am just getting too old, ha ha.

Whenever I read the trivia on movies I like, it's quite often the case that the directors often have to struggle with the companies producing the movies. One good example is Star Wars (even though I don't consider myself a Star Wars fan), imagine if George Lucas couldn't convince the producers. The big movie companies needs to learn that great movies will be watched even if it isn't considered main stream material. A good example was how they screwed up Batman. The first and second Batman movies were ok, they had fantasy feeling to it (typical Tim Burton style), but it worked and both movies were successfull. But then the movie companies screw it over, thinking it's too dark and wants the next Batman to be more kid friendly (I would like to point out that Kids aren't stupid and can tell reality from fantasy and that I think they should watch movies like Kill Bill, Batman (But not dark movies like apocalypse now)). What followed were two awfull movies Batman forever and Batman and Robin.

MTV rant, part 1

Mtv stands for Music Television.

Do me a favour everyone, go zap to your local mtv. Chances are that there are commercials ofc, so you might have to wait a bit to see what the actual program is. Some boring reality show that has nothing to do with music, right? And when they do play music, you're normally asleep.

What does this tell you, when you have to turn on MTV late at night if you actually want to see some music videos (though I would hardly call the music on right now music). Correct me if I am wrong, but when I zap to a channel called Music Television, I expect to see music or at least something related to music (Beavis and Butt-head is a brilliant example, besides them running around being dumb and parodying social issues, they commented and played a lot of music videos).

Earlier today when zap by it was surprise surprise "reality" shows (If you have take a little time to study you will see most of it is scripted, as if the bad acting wasn't telling). A reality show is not something I'm a big fan of.
Although I will admit I do enjoy watching Gordon Ramsey getting angry. But these "reality" shows on MTV are idiotic. Some spoiled 16 year old throwing a huge party spending who knows how much of her spineless parents money (They seem to think that throwing money at their girl will teach her values) or a bunch of young good looking people living in a mansion complaining about each other (and then name the show the real world), isn't what I want to see when I zap on MTV.

This brings me to another issue. Is shallowness and only caring about appearance the only important thing in the world now? According to all the shows in MTV that's what they're trying to tell us that. We're being flooded with images that party and appearing sexy is the only thing that matters in life. What the hell has this anything to do with music, the freaking channel is called MUSIC Television. I want to see bands and artist and their videos, not another idiotic show like NEXT, Date my mom or whatever.

MTV rant, part 2

Whenever MTV do show music, it's horrible stuff.

Let us take rap music videos for instance. A young rapper flashing his platinum chains, drives very expensive cars and half naked women everywhere, rapping about how dope he is and all the haters are just jealous.

Wait wait, stop!
Wasn't rap about telling the story of the poverty and struggling each day in the ghettos?

Ever since the death of Tupac (Yes, yes I know. Mainstream rapper and all, still did the only mainstream rapper that had the guts to speak out against the social issues.) it seems like all the popular rappers today have forgotten what rapping is all about. Don't get me wrong, there are still rappers who rap about the social issues, one good example would be Immortal Technique.
But rappers like the one mentioned above, are not in the mainstream media (TV, Radio etc.).
So what are seeing today is just a glorification about materialism and how money makes you happy. Not to mention that it gives us a false impression of black people, being idiots who can't speak proper English, waste all their money on jewels, in general only care about their own well being and how they are appearing to others. (I know, one shouldn't base ones opinion on an entire race of people from a music video.).
Do your self a favour go youtube Tupac, Brenda's got a baby and then compare it to any song from one of the popular rappers today like 50 cent or lil Jon.

Now with rap out of the way, let us take a look on rock/metal.

Where the hell are all the heavy metal bands ? Take Megadeth for example, I personally find them to be a great band, but do you ever see them on MTV anymore? No instead we see bands like Blink 182, Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Avril Lavigne, Green day and Bloodhound gang (who themselves think they're crappy and wonder why people buy their music).
I don't find any of these bands artistic or making songs that are in general special.
Bands like Death, Black Sabbath, Metallica and were pioneers. They wrote awesome stuff, not to mention laying the foundation of a new genre.
Today's bands, however, are extremely repetitive in their music and their lyrics doesn't leave me with a feeling that leaves me thinking.

As with rap let's go to youtube and compare some mainstream rock songs, let's start with Green day, American Idiot and compare that with Aus-rotten, The System Works for Them. You tell me which one is the true punk band.
Or let's try with metal. Youtube Nickleback, how you remind me and compare that with Death, Lack of Comprehension. I think you can agree with me that Death is the more artistic bands with nice ups and downs in the tone which suits the lyric generally. Where as Nickleback sounds pretty much the same the whole song.

Why on earth are these great artist and musicians not getting any screen time? Their lyrics are inspiring and truly works of art. I thought MTV was suppose to be a rebellious station that voiced the voice of the youth, through music?
